About the role
This post is an opportunity for an experienced,
high-calibre, motivated and commercially-minded scientist to join our
ornithology consultancy team. The key functions of this team include:
To organise, undertake and analyse
aerial surveys of birds – particularly offshore.
Provision of expert advice and
interpretation, including EIA and HRA, marine planning and consenting for
offshore renewables projects.
Using robust science to find
solutions for both the private and public sectors; the APEM migration model now
widely used for offshore developments is such a solution.
As part of the ongoing expansion of APEM’s
ornithology consultancy team we have a vacancy for an experienced ornithologist
or senior ornithologist. The ideal candidate will have experience and a good
working knowledge of:
Potential impacts of marine or
coastal developments on ornithological features and the assessment of such
impacts through EIA and HRA.
Analysis of ecological data and
proficiency in statistical packages.
Commercial consultancy practice and
business development.
The balance of strengths and experience in these
areas will determine the salary level and the grade of the appointment as set
out below.
Consultant ornithologist
You will be qualified to the minimum of BSc level
in a relevant discipline, and have evidence of relevant ornithological
experience. You will be self-motivated and able to work independently as well
as part of a multi-disciplinary project team. Excellent communication skills,
both verbal and written are therefore essential, as well as an attention to
detail and ability to work to tight deadlines.
Senior ornithologist
You will be qualified to MSc or PhD level or have
gained equivalent experience, and have a sound knowledge of avian ecology and
behaviour. You will be experienced in regularly advising clients and other
stakeholders on ornithology issues relating to infrastructure projects. You
should be skilled in analysis of ecological data and be proficient working with
basic statistical packages. An understanding of statistical modelling is
preferred, and a background in spatial analysis is useful.
As well as having strong interpersonal skills,
excellent verbal and written communication skills, and a great attention to
detail, you will have proven experience of management of both people and
complex projects. With strong organisational and motivational skills, you
will be able to manage a project team, delivering projects to a high standard
on time.
